Biography

Dr. Clayton completed her MD and psychiatry residency at UVA. She served in the US Navy medical corps, returning to UVA in 1990 where she is the David C. Wilson Professor and Chair of Psychiatry and Professor of Clinical Obstetrics & Gynecology. Dr. Clayton is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Clayton has published widely, primarily on mood disorders associated with reproductive-life events in women, sexual dysfunction related to illness and medications, and treatment of sexual disorders. She co-edited Women’s Mental Health: A Comprehensive Textbook. She is Consulting Editor for the Journal of Sex & Marital Therapy, the Journal of Sexual Medicine, and the Archives of Women’s Mental Health. She was President of the International Society for the Study of Women’s Sexual Health 2005-2007. She serves on the Board of the American Society of Clinical Psychopharmacology. She developed and validated the Changes in Sexual Functioning Questionnaire, available in more than 60 languages, and utilized in over 70 studies. Her book on women’s sexuality for the general public, Satisfaction: Women, Sex, and the Quest for Intimacy was published in January 2007.
