Biography

Dr. Florez received his medical degree with honors (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Zulia School of Medicine in Maracaibo, Venezuela. He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, & Geriatrics, and graduate studies in Epidemiology (PhD) and Public Health (MPH) at the University of Miami/ Jackson Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Florez has a clinical research interest on the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease and diabetes and has been actively involved in the evaluation of patients with the metabolic syndrome in studies funded by the National Institute of Health, the VA Cooperative Studies Program, the Pan American Health Organization and the American Heart Association. Dr. Florez works in the translation of diabetes prevention as part of the MOVE weight management program, supported by the VA National Center for Health Promotion & Disease Prevention. He leads the efforts of the Healthy Aging Research Collaborative (HARC) to reduce the burden of diabetes in South Florida older adults.
