Biography

Dr. Nasser Lakkis graduated from the American University of Beirut, with a combined Master of Science and Medical Doctor degree in 1990. He then joined Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas where he completed a residency in Internal Medicine (1993), followed by a fellowship in General Cardiology (1996) and advanced lnterventional Cardiology (1997). He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Sciences and lnterventional Cardiology. Dr. Lakkis began his academic career at Baylor College of Medicine at the Assistant Professor level in 1997 and rose up the ranks of academia to the level of full Professor in 2006. Dr. Lakkis is currently the Chief of Cardiology at Ben Taub General Hospital and the Program Director for Cardiovascular Diseases and lnterventional Cardiology Fellowship programs at Baylor College of Medicine. His primary interests as a Clinical Cardiologist are percutaneous therapy for hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy and understanding platelet function as it pertains to acute coronary syndrome and percutaneous interventions. Dr. Lakkis is one of the first in the United States to use injections of alcohol into the septal arteries to treat symptomatic patients with hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy. This work has culminated in multiple publications on the safety and efficacy of this technique. Other areas of research focus on the inflammatory and thrombotic processes that occur in acute coronary syndrome following angioplasty. Dr. Lakkis has been extensively involved in the education of students, residents and fellows at Baylor College of Medicine. His educational efforts have been rewarded by being selected on a yearly basis for the Award for Excellence in Teaching given by the fellows in both the Cardiovascular Diseases and lnterventional Cardiology programs. The award is now named after him. Dr. Lakkis was awarded the Fulbright and Jaworski Faculty Excellence Award and elected to the Academy of Distinguished Educators. In addition, he received the Gifted Teacher Award from the American College of Cardiology in 2008. He has received the Service First Hero Award from the Harris Health System many times for his commitment and dedication to excellence in patient care and education. In 2014, Dr. Lakkis received the Master Clinician Lifetime Award from Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Lakkis runs one of the top STEMI programs in the country at the busiest Levell trauma center in Texas. He received the NCDR Platinum Award from ACC/AHA- GWTG (Get with the Guidelines), acknowledging the quality of care provided to patients at Ben Taub General Hospital.
