Assessing Statin Therapy: What are Their Differences?

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize statin drug interactions and select appropriate therapies that will not carry an increased risk of adverse events.
  2. Apply evidence-based clinical study data into practice that demonstrates statins’ ability to modify both LDL-C and HDL-C to optimize drug selection.
  3. Evaluate the available safety data concerning statins, proteinuria, hyperglycemia, and dose reduction requirements in patients with kidney failure and apply this knowledge to therapeutic risk/benefit analysis.

  1. Discuss the role of the kidney in glucose homeostasis

  3. Explain the mechanism of action of therapies that act through the kidney to reduce hyperglycemia in type 2 diabetes
  4. Assess clinical efficacy and safety data, and identify the potential place of therapies that target the kidney in the management of type 2 diabetes

  1. Diagnose IBS based upon symptoms that may be shared with other functional gastrointestinal disorders or organic diseases
  2. Compare and contrast the efficacy and safety of available pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatment options for IBS
  3. Apply appropriate and comprehensive treatment strategies to enhance the care of patients with IBS

Insulin 101: An Introduction to Insulin Therapy in the 21st Century

Learning Objectives:

  1. Calculate appropriate insulin doses for initiating basal and basal-prandial insulin regimens in T2DM
  2. Demonstrate best practices in insulin injection and SMBG techniques to improve treatment adherence and potentially impact patient outcomes
  3. Apply pattern recognition to SMBG data to appropriately titrate insulin doses and adjust insulin regimens to specific patient needs
  4. Summarize the efficacy and safety findings from clinical trials of investigational insulins and the combination of incretin-based therapies with insulin

A Patient-Centered Approach to the Management of Depression: Achieving and Maintaining Remission in the Primary Care Setting

Learning Objectives:

  1. Outline the social and economic impact of depression and related comorbidities in the United States.
  2. Define optimal outcomes in major depressive disorder as compared to suboptimal response and examine the impact of failing to achieve remission on patient outcomes.
  3. Evaluate measurement-based care, specifically the APA guidelines, and strategies for implementation in practice to address unmet clinical needs of patients with depression when initial antidepressants are insufficient.
  4. Using a case-based approach, apply clinical data and guideline recommendations to the clinical care of patients suffering from depression and formulate appropriate and effective treatment plans.

Type 2 Diabetes - Role of Insulin-Based Therapy

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the pathophysiology of T2DM and its practical implications for multi-organ disease mandating early recognition and treatment
  2. Conduct an initial and ongoing assessment of A1C, fasting blood glucose, and postprandial blood glucose to achieve tight glycemic control, with appropriate referral when necessary
  3. Evaluate the mechanisms and clinical profiles of insulin formulations, addressing dosing regimen, patient age, ethnicity, and other determinants of individualized care
  4. Collaborate with endocrinologists, cardiologists, nurse practitioners, dietitians, diabetes educators, and other care providers to formulate and implement a comprehensive treatment that includes pharmacologic as well as lifestyle interventions
  5. Educate patients on the causes, symptoms, and risks associated with hypoglycemia and implement new models of care to overcome patient and system barriers to therapeutic regimen adherence
