Sonia Angell

Biography

As Director of the CVD Program at the NYC Health Department, Dr. Angell is responsible for overseeing the development of initiatives and policies designed to prevent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in NYC residents, and to eliminate related health disparities. Her program is responsible for actions to restrict the use of artificial trans fat in restaurants and is now leading a national effort to reduce population sodium intake. Other program activities aim to improve the clinical diagnosis, treatment and control of cardiovascular disease risk factors through clinical systems change and community outreach. She is a member of Institute of Medicine Committee on Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake. Dr. Angell received her medical degree from the University of California, San Francisco, and completed Primary Care Internal Medicine residency training at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. She has a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and a Masters in Public Health from the University of Michigan.
