Biography

Loris Y. Hwang, MD, MS is an Associate Professor and the Director of Adolescent & Young Adult Reproductive Health in Clinical Care and Research, in the Department of Pediatrics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Mattel Children’s Hospital. Dr. Hwang originally entered the field of adolescent and young adult medicine after 6 years of primary care pediatrics practice in the greater Seattle area. She completed her Adolescent Medicine fellowship at the University of California San Francisco (UCSF). As a faculty member at UCSF, Dr. Hwang developed a new clinical service to provide LARCs (long-acting reversible contraception, defined as IUDs and arm implants) to patients at the UCSF Teen Clinic and trained adolescent medicine fellows in these procedures. At UCLA, she has started an Adolescent & Young Adult Reproductive Health Clinic that offers gynecologic services for both healthy females and those with chronic medical issues. She also provides women’s health care at the UCLA Ashe Student Health Center. Dr. Hwang’s clinical research focuses on cervical epithelial maturation in adolescent women; use of colpophotography in research; risks for STIs including Chlamydia trachomatis and Human Papillomavirus (HPV); and contraception. Her research has received the Robert Durant Award for Statistical Rigor and Innovation in Adolescent Health Research from the Society for Adolescent Medicine, the New Investigator Award from the Society for Adolescent Medicine, and the Ortho McNeil Infectious Disease Scholar Award from the Western Society for Pediatric Research.
