Biography

Dr. Zaw graduated from Institute of Medicine (2), Rangoon, Burma in 1985 and practiced general medicine in rural and urban settings before immigrated to the U.S. in 1992. After completion of Internal Medicine Residency at St. Barnabas Hospital in Bronx, New York in 1997, he worked as a primary care provider at Fargo VAMC, North Dakota and joined as a clinical faculty of University of North Dakota. He then worked as HBPC Director at Buffalo VAMC from 2002 to 2003 and then went on to complete “VA Inter-professional Palliative Care Fellowship” at Palo Alto VAMC in 2004 and “Geriatric Medicine Fellowship” at Montefiore Medical Center, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Bronx, New York in 2005. Dr. Zaw joined Geriatrics and Extended Care at Miami VAMC, serving as a faculty at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine in August 2005. He developed a new hospice and palliative care program at Miami VAMC during his tenure. He became Associate Chief of Staff, Geriatrics and Extended Care at Hines VA Hospital in 2012. Dr. Zaw returned to University of Miami to lead palliative care program at UHealth in October 2013 and assumed responsibility as Director of Palliative Medicine Program at UHealth. Dr. Zaw is the founding program director of ACGME-Accredited Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship at UM/JMH since 2014. As a clinician educator and expert in hospice and palliative medicine, he provides clinical care and educates hospice and palliative medicine to the next generations of physicians.
