Although many believe that helping patients to achieve a healthy weight is of minimal complexity, weight regulation and management is a challenging endeavor. It is impossible to overestimate the importance of sleep. Adequate sleep is required for normal immune and hormonal function as well as for the clearance of Alzheimer-related proteins from the brain. But sleep plays its most critical role in supporting offline memory processing. Sleep contributes to the stabilization and strengthening of memories. It also supports the selective retention of emotional memories, the extraction of the gist of a learning session, and the discovery of the rules governing a complex probabilistic game. Dreams can reflect this ongoing memory processing, and dream content can predict subsequent memory improvement. Dreaming, as a conscious experience, may also play an important role in discovering connections among our manifold memories. e-Cigarettes were 1st introduced to the US market in 2007, essentially to help smokers stop smoking tobacco-based cigarettes. There is some evidence that, for some adults, it may be beneficial to assist with smoking cessation. However, the use of e-Cigarettes and vaping (referred to as ENDS – electronic nicotine delivery systems), has increased significantly, specifically in the US teen population. The FDA and AAP have addressed the concerns surrounding e-Cigarettes and vaping in both regulations and policy statements. Join us as we discuss the latest evidence, potential benefits, and public health concerns regarding e-Cigarettes and vaping.
Lifestyle intervention is the primary step of obesity management. Multidisciplinary approach was shown to be effective on short and long-term. Several obesity medications are available and are effective for weight management with reasonable risk. Combining medications with lifestyle is more effective then either alone. Bariatric surgery is valuable for patients with severe obesity, but long-term consequences should be carefully evaluated against their benefit.
