Overview
In this practical, case-based discussion, we will explore common questions and concerns raised by today’s pediatric patients and their parents. Specifically, we will discuss the data around leucovorin use for autism spectrum disorder. We will also discuss addressing parental concerns around routine pediatric vaccinations and the pros/cons of lipid screening in adolescents. Finally, we will touch upon the nuances of caring for adolescents seeking pregnancy termination and the use of weight loss medications in adolescent patients.
Learning Objectives
- Demonstrate understanding of the data surrounding leucovorin use for autism spectrum disorder and be able to counsel families who have questions surrounding this medication.
- Develop an approach to counsel parents of pediatric patients who have reservations about administering the hepatitis B vaccine at birth and the HPV vaccine during childhood.
- Demonstrate understanding of the pros and cons of lipid screening during adolescence.
- Develop an approach to counseling an adolescent who desires pregnancy termination.
- Demonstrate understanding of medical indications as well as potential risks and benefits of GLP-1 agonist medications for adolescent patients and develop an approach to counseling patients and parents about these medications.
