Overview

This session covers the diagnosis and management of Alzheimer's disease and other common dementias, including Lewy body dementia and LATE. Learners will review NIA-AA criteria, when to order biomarkers including new plasma markers, emerging disease-modifying therapies lecanemab and donanemab, and practical approaches to driving, agitation, diet, and exercise

The session "Memory Loss, Alzheimer's Disease, & Dementia - Update 2026" (1 hour) is designed to satisfy state licensure requirements on Dementia, Alzheimer's Disease, and Geriatrics in CT (NP), in MA (MD/DO), and in RI (MD/DO, NP).

Learning Objectives

  • Apply the NIA-AA Criteria to diagnosis Alzheimer’s disease dementia (AD) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD
  • Explain the role of biomarkers, including new plasma markers, in the diagnosis of AD and other common dementias, including dementia with Lewy bodies
  • Discuss LATE (Limbic-predominant, Age-related, TDP-43 Encephalopathy)
  • Describe the use of lecanemab (Leqembi) and donanemab (Kisunla) in the management of AD
  • Develop strategies to manage agitation and driving safety in patients with dementia, and discuss the data on diet and exercise for memory
