Biography

Dr. Dennis E. Doherty, M.D., FCCP, is a Professor of Medicine at the Lexington Veterans Administration Medical Center and in the Division of Pulmonary, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine and Chandler Medical Center. He completed his medical school training and Internal Medicine residency at The Ohio State College of Medicine in Columbus, Ohio in 1983, and his Pulmonary and Critical Care Fellowship at the University of Colorado Medical Center and National Jewish Medical and Research Center in Denver, Colorado, where he remained on faculty for 11 years. In 1996 he relocated to The University of Kentucky to serve as Chief of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Division until 2007 when he became Chairman of Medicine at the Lexington VAMC. Dr. Doherty has been Principal Investigator on over 55 grants from the NIH, Veterans Administration, American Lung Association, and other granting organizations for basic science and clinical studies, and he has published over 175 articles, abstracts, and chapters on the subjects of acute lung inflammation, chronic lung inflammation, obstructive lung disease, and pulmonary fibrosis. He has also conducted several clinical research studies in the areas of asthma, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. He is the immediate-past Chairman of the National Lung Health Education Program (NLHEP), a fellow in the American College of Chest Physicians, President of the Kentucky Thoracic Society and a past Chairman of the American Thoracic Society Council of state Chapter Representatives (Thoracic Societies in the U.S.), former Board member of the American Lung Association of Kentucky, and a member of the American College of Physicians, American Thoracic Society (serving as a member of the ATS Board of Directors, the Program and Budget, Communications, Documents Development and Implementation, Marketing, and Clinicians Advisory Committees, and past board member of the ATS Foundation), American Association for Respiratory Care, US Pharmacopeia, Central and Western Societies for Clinical Investigation, and the American Society for Cell Biology. Dr. Doherty is on the Executive Committee of the U.S. COPD Coalition, and is the President-Elect of and serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Medical Direction of Respiratory Care (NAMDRC), and the Board of Directors of the National Respiratory Training Center based in England. Dr. Doherty’s recent honors include two Telly Awards (honor the finest video and film productions): 2002 National Telly Award- Category: Winner - Best Medical Education Video- ‘COPD: New Concepts in Disease Management; the Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) Guidelines and Changes in Management Concepts, 2005 National Telly Award: Finalist- Medical Education “COPD Impact CD”, and a Finalist for a 2009 Freddie Award (International Health and Medical Media Awards) - Category: Inflammatory Diseases Best Medical Education Video- “Pulmonary Perspectives: Focus on Management of COPD”. For 10 consecutive years from 2003 to 2012 he was selected by his peers for inclusion in Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. 3rd through 12th editions as one of America’s Top Doctors in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, selected by his peers to 2005-2006, 2007-2008, 2009-2010 and 2011-2012 for Best Doctors in America, and was commissioned by the Governor of Kentucky as a Kentucky Colonel. He is an avid home winemaker (6 Gold, 8 Silver and 15 Bronze medals, and 2 Blue, Red, and White State Fair ribbons- (first, second, third place), and a former national handball champion.
