Biography

Dr. Robert Kaniecki graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Notre Dame where he was named a Notre Dame Scholar and to the Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Epsilon Delta Honor Societies. He attended the Washington University School of Medicine, graduated second in his class, and received Alpha Omega Alpha and several scholastic awards. Following his graduation, he completed his medical and neurology training at Barnes Hospital and Washington University, where he served as chief resident his final year. Being a native Pittsburgher, Dr. Kaniecki returned there in 1992 to found and direct the Allegheny General Headache Center. In 2000 he was appointed Director of the University of Pittsburgh Headache Center and Chief of the Headache Division, where he now also serves as an Assistant Professor of Neurology. Dr. Kaniecki has authored or co-authored numerous articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and is presently Abstracts and Citations editor for the journal Headache. His research interests include patient satisfaction with headache treatments, neck pain associated with migraine headache, the overlap between tension and migraine headaches, and outpatient protocols designed to assess and manage chronic migraine. Dr. Kaniecki is a member of numerous professional and scientific societies, including the American Headache Society, the National Headache Foundation, the International Headache Society and the Primary Care Network. He is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and in 2007 received subspecialty certification in Headache Medicine from the United Council for Neurological Subspecialties. Dr Kaniecki is passionate about headache education and he commits significant time and energy both locally and nationally into teaching primary care providers and specialists about headache patients and their management. His teaching skills have been recognized through the University of Pittsburgh Excellence in Teaching Award and National Headache Foundation’s Lectureship Award, and he has received the prestigious Healthcare Provider of the Year from the National Headache Foundation.
