John J. Russell

Biography

John J. Russell, MD, FAAFP, a graduate of Penn State College of Medicine, completed his residency in Family Practice at Abington Memorial Hospital in Abington, Pennsylvania, where he served as co-chief resident. He is currently the Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Abington Memorial Hospital and a Clinical Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Sidney Kimmel Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dr. Russell has served as a contributing editor for several primary care publications and has served as a reviewer for and contributor to American Family Physician and Vaccine. He is the author or coauthor of multiple journal publications on family medicine topics, including adult immunizations, dermatology, and infectious diseases. He has been a co-editor of clinical updates from the American Academy of Family Physicians, Dr. Russell is also a co-author of the textbook Dermatology Skills for Primary Care: An Illustrated Guide with another textbook on dermatology in primary care being published in 2019. He has been a member of the editorial advisory board for ClinicalEdge™, an online feature of The Journal of Family Practice and has also been a contributor to online education through Univadis. He lectures to primary care physicians, both regionally and nationally, on a variety of primary care and family medicine topics, including more than 100 continuing medical education programs on infectious diseases and immunizations, asthma, lipids, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Since 2014, he has served as the host of the “Clinician’s Roundtable and Book Club on ReachMD™ (SiriusXM®/iHeartRadio). He also serves as the cohost of the monthly ADA podcast on diabetes, “Diabetes Core Update.” Dr. Russell has held a number of leadership roles as a practicing physician, including serving as president of the Abington Memorial Hospital Medical Executive Committee. Additionally, he has been chairman of the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee at Abington Memorial Hospital since 2005 and Co-Chair of the Bioethics Committee since 2001. Dr. Russell has been named a “Top Doctor in Family Medicine” by Philadelphia magazine, recognized as one of America’s Top Doctors by Consumers’ Checkbook magazine, and ranked a “Top Doctor in Family Medicine” by US News and World Report.
