Biography

Stuart L. Silverman, MD, FACP, FACR, is Clinical Professor of Medicine and Rheumatology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles. He is board-certified by the American Boards of Internal Medicine and Rheumatology and the co-joint Boards of Allergy and Immunology. He is internationally recognized in the fields of osteoporosis and fibromyalgia. Dr. Silverman has published over 80 peer-reviewed scientific articles on rheumatology and osteoporosis as well as numerous abstracts and chapters. He is the developer of the Osteoporosis Assessment Questionnaire or OPAQ, an internationally used osteoporosis-targeted quality of life self-assessment instrument. His research interests in osteoporosis include quality of life measurement; prevention and treatment of postmenopausal and glucocorticoid osteoporosis; patient decision making and adherence; and development of patient education and self-management programs. Dr. Silverman is a member of the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) committee of scientific advisors and a consultant to the NIH Osteoporosis and Related Bone Diseases ~ National Resource Center. He is a member of the National Osteoporosis Foundation Scientific Advisory Council. In addition, he is Medical Director of the Osteoporosis Medical Center, a nonprofit clinical research center, has served as Medical Director of the Fibromyalgia Rehabilitation Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, and is a member of the Advisory Board of the National Fibromyalgia Association. He is a member of the WHO task force on absolute fracture risk and the US project manager for ICUROS, an IOF-sponsored study of the costs and utilities following fracture. He maintains an active private practice.
