Overview
Most primary care providers encounter issues at the crossroads of nephrology care daily. Yet many caregivers find electrolyte abnormalities and care of patients with kidney disease intimidating. This session will give caregivers the tools that they need to address common issues with more confidence. The focus will be on recognition and treatment of the most common of these issues: hyponatremia, proteinuria, and diabetic kidney disease.
Learning Objectives
- Recognize that hyponatremia results from intake of dilute fluids in excess of the kidneys’ ability to excrete water.
- Design a treatment plan for hyponatremia based on the etiology
- Consider the importance of a holistic approach to patients with kidney disease and the need to emphasize lifestyle changes in addition to pharmacologic interventions
- Understand how strategies that target albuminuria can be used to slow the decline in kidney function
- Recognize the broad range of therapeutic interventions now available to address diabetic kidney disease
