Overview
Dysphagia is a common symptom encountered in clinical practice. This presentation will review common patient scenarios and provide a practical framework for the work-up and management from a primary care lens.
Learning Objectives
- Differentiate between oropharyngeal and esophageal causes of dysphagia and recognize the diagnostic and management differences between the two categories
- Recognize the “can’t miss” signs and symptoms that prompt referral to a gastroenterologist
- Outline the workup and management of common causes of esophageal dysphagia, including GERD, eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE), pill esophagitis, and motility disorders
- Recognize the appropriate referral specialty (eg, GI vs ENT vs neurology) based on the patient’s presentation
