Overview

In this session, the speaker will discuss some challenging diagnostic cases that primary care practitioners may face in their practice. These cases will feature abnormal bloating and diarrhea, headache and vision changes, and unusual muscle pain and weakness. You will learn which aspects of the history and physical exam are most useful to establish certain diagnoses, increase your awareness of certain uncommon but “can’t miss” diagnoses, and become familiar with clinical decision aids that improve diagnostic accuracy for certain common diagnoses.

Learning Objectives

  • Differentiate between common and uncommon causes of abdominal bloating, diarrhea, and hypoglycemia, recognizing exocrine pancreatic insufficiency within a broad differential diagnosis
  • Evaluate the diagnostic approach and management strategies for headache and vision changes, with a focus on idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) and the role of weight management in disease remission
  • Apply clinical reasoning to assess muscle pain and weakness, identifying key features of polymyositis, statin-induced myopathy, and other neuromuscular and paraneoplastic conditions
