Biography

Dr. James Besante is a board-certified internist and addiction medicine specialist who designs, builds, and leads evidence-based systems that make recovery possible at scale. As Chief Medical Officer of one of the largest addiction treatment providers in the Southwest, he has led systemwide transformation efforts. These include achieving Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) designation and expanding access to care across urban and rural regions. He has developed crisis stabilization and justice-involved programs that close critical gaps in the continuum of care, launched new medical service lines, and managed major federal and state grants. His work bridges medicine, leadership, and systems design, and he has built partnerships with hospitals, payers, and policymakers to make treatment more accessible and equitable across diverse communities. Because he trained as an internist, he brings a primary care perspective to addiction medicine and a practical sense of how evidence-based treatment can fit into everyday clinical practice.
