Biography

Hashem B. El-Serag, MD, MPH, obtained his medical degree from Al-Arab Medical University in Libya, completed his internship and residency in internal medicine (1995) at Greenwich Hospital, Yale University, Connecticut, and completed a fellowship in clinical gastroenterology (1997) at the University of New Mexico, Albuquerque, New Mexico, where he also earned a master’s degree in public health (1998). In 1999, Dr. El-Serag joined the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, where he become chief of the Section of Gastroenterology and Hepatology (since 2007) and leader of the clinical epidemiology and outcomes program at Houston Center for Quality of Care and Utilization Studies. Dr. El-Serag’s research focuses on the clinical epidemiology and outcomes of several liver disorders, including GERD, Barrett's esophagus, hepatocellular carcinoma and hepatitis C. His seminal work on hepatocellular carcinoma, “Rising Incidence of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in the United States,” was published in 1999 in the New England Journal of Medicine and has been cited more than 2000 times. Dr. El-Serag has approximately 300 articles published in press. Several of his studies were published in notable journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Archives of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hepatology, and Gut. Dr. El-Serag has assumed several leadership roles in national organizations, such as the American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Gastroenterology, and American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases. He was the associate editor (2006-2011) for Gastroenterology, and the Editor in Chief for Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigators (ASCI) and the Association of American Physicians (AAP). Dr. El-Serag has obtained grant funding from the National Institutes of Health and Veteran Affairs (Merit), as well as several grants from professional societies, foundations, and industry. Dr. El-Serag has been elected by his peers for inclusion in Best Doctors in America® and he has also been in recent listing in the Thompson Reuter “World’s most Influential Scientific Minds, 2014 in the area of Clinical Medicine.
