Biography

Dr. Fierer is a graduate of Columbia College in New York City and of NYU School of Medicine. He did a residency in Internal Medicine at Yale sandwiched around a two year stint as an Epidemic Intelligence Officer with the Communicable Diseases Center (CDC). He began his Infectious Diseases fellowship training at the University of Pittsburgh with Professor Abraham Braude and finished his fellowship at UC San Diego School of Medicine. In 1971 he was appointed an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the newly opened VA Medical Center. He rose through the ranks to become Professor of Medicine and Pathology. In 1980 he was appointed Section Chief at the VA and in 1986 he succeeded Dr. Braude as Division Head at UC San Diego, a position he held until stepping down in 2005. He continues to be the Section Head at the VA and Director of the Microbiology Laboratory at the VA. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society and received their award as the Outstanding Clinical Teacher in 2009. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is the author of more than 150 peer-reviewed papers on subjects ranging from molecular pathogenesis to clinical research.
