Dr. Freitag stepped down after 27 years as co-director of the Diamond Headache Clinic in Chicago, Illinois in 2010 He assumed his new role as the Medical Director for the Comprehensive Headache Center in the Department of Neurosciences at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas Texas in the fall of 2010. He is also the Director for Headache Medicine Research at the Baylor Research Institute. He is the chair of the UCNS Headache Medicine Fellowship at Baylor. Dr. Freitag is a fellow of the American Headache Society and is certified in headache medicine by the United Council for Neurologic Specialties. He has a certificate of added qualification in headache management. He served on the Board of Directors of the National Headache Foundation for 20 years. He is a member of the US Headache Guideline Consortium. Dr. Freitag was the lead author of the paper from the section of the Consortium addressing inpatient treatment of headache, which has become the guideline for inpatient treatment of headache recognized by the National Guideline Clearinghouse. He is actively involved in developing quality of care parameters to enhance patient outcomes. He is co-editor of the National Headache Foundation Standards of Care. Over the past nearly 30 years, Dr. Freitag has treated patients, from early childhood to late life from across the US and many foreign nations for headache. He has lectured widely to colleagues and the public on headache diagnosis and treatment. He has led numerous clinical research initiatives in developing and expanding the scope of their uses for adolescents and adults in treatment of migraine and other headache disorders. He has been involved in basic science studies examining the biology of migraine and examining the pharmacology of drugs for headache and the biochemistry of headache triggers. He has mentored students, residents and fellows in the art and science of headache medicine. He has over 100 articles in the peer reviewed literature as well as authoring or contributed to some of the most important textbooks in headache medicine.
