Biography

Dr. Irwig received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University and his M.D. degree from Cornell University with honors in research. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and an endocrinology fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle. Dr. Irwig’s research interests include transgender medicine, men with persistent sexual and non-sexual side effects of finasteride (Propecia) and men with borderline testosterone levels. He has over 40 peer-reviewed publications appearing in multiple journals including Hypertension, Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology and Nature Reviews Urology. His research findings have been featured in many national and international mainstream publications and broadcast outlets including: The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, ABC World News, CBS News, MSNBC.com, CNN, Men’s Health Magazine, Men’s Journal and The Philadelphia Inquirer. Dr. Irwig is a regular invited faculty member for the global educational initiative courses run by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health (WPATH) and is a co-author on two chapters of WPATH’s Standards of Care 8 (hormone therapy and eunuchs). He has presented over 100 invited lectures at hospitals, medical schools and conferences across 5 continents on transgender health and male hypogonadism.
