Biography

Dr. Jeffrey D. Klausner is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. In addition to directing the Klausner Research Group, he is an Investigator with the COVID-19 Pandemic Research Center within the Department of Population and Public Health Sciences. Dr. Klausner earned his medical degree from Cornell University Medical College and his master’s in public health with a focus on international health and epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health. He completed his internship and residency in internal medicine at New York University Medical Center and his fellowship in infectious diseases at the University of Washington. Dr. Klausner was previously a faculty member at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and held leadership roles at the San Francisco Department of Public Health. He then served as Branch Chief for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and tuberculosis at the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in Pretoria, South Africa, helping lead the South African PEPFAR program for care and treatment. After returning from South Africa, Klausner was a senior faculty member at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) David Geffen School of Medicine and the Department of Epidemiology at the Fielding School of Public Health. At UCLA, Dr. Klausner was the Principal Investigator for multiple National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded networks, projects, and studies on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), antimicrobial resistance, and HIV prevention in Peru, Botswana, South Africa, Vietnam, Haiti, Pakistan, and India. Dr. Klausner has more than 30 years of infectious disease prevention and clinical research experience. Dr. Klausner’s research interests include applied epidemiology and the prevention and control of infectious diseases of public health importance, such as HIV, STIs, tuberculosis, COVID-19, and cryptococcal infections. Dr. Klausner founded and helps lead the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health Long COVID workgroup. He has been funded by the NIH and CDC as well as major philanthropies, and private pharmaceutical and test manufacturers to study the benefits of new ways to find and treat infectious diseases. Dr. Klausner is a frequent advisor to the CDC, NIH, and World Health Organization.
