Biography

Sanjay J. Mathew, M.D. is a Staff Physician and Director of the Mood and Anxiety Disorders Research Program in the Mental Health Care Line at the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center. At Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), he holds the Johnson Family Chair for Research in Psychiatry and is an Associate Professor with Tenure in the Menninger Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Mathew’s research program is the recipient of federal NIH grants and contracts to develop novel therapies for patients with serious, treatmentresistant mood disorders and PTSD. His program has special interest in novel pharmacotherapies which impact the stress response and enhance neuroplasticity, which include agents which modulate the glutamatergic, HPA axis, and opiate systems. His team is at the forefront of research on the application of low-dose ketamine, an anesthetic agent, for the rapid relief of severe depression and suicidality.
