Biography
Dr. McCarthy is a physician scientist with clinical expertise in neuroimmunology and general neurology. Dr. McCarthy directs the VA Multiple Sclerosis Center of Excellence hub site at the Miami Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a multi-disciplinary program for veterans with MS. Dr. McCarthy’s research interests include laboratory-based studies in the pathogenesis of viral infections in the nervous system, emphasizing HIV, and how these affect neurogenesis and neuronal survival. Dr. McCarthy has been the recipient of several Merit Review research awards from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Dr. McCarthy currently leads an investigator-initiated study of the effects of the MS medication fingolimod on neuronal responses to HIV exposure.
