Biography

Dr. O’Brien is a practicing general internist and researcher at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. His research focuses on how to identify adults who are at-risk for diabetes and how to lower their risk of developing the disease, especially among racial/ethnic minority populations. Dr. O’Brien’s work in diabetes prevention includes epidemiologic studies of diabetes prevalence and risk factors, intervention studies to prevent diabetes in high-risk groups, and efforts to disseminate and implement effective diabetes prevention models in ‘real world’ settings. Dr. O’Brien’s research program is funded by the National Institutes of Health, and has been recognized by several regional and national awards. As a practicing general internist, Dr. O’Brien enjoys applying the findings from his research in clinic, and using his clinical experiences to inform research.
