Biography

David S. Schade, MD, was born in New York City and grew up in Washington, DC. He attended Davidson College in North Carolina and went on to medical school at Washington University in St. Louis. He took his internal medicine residency training at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. He continued there with an Endocrinology Fellowship. He then joined the endocrinology faculty and received a Research Career Development Award from the NIH. His research career has focused on both lipid metabolism and diabetes. In collaboration with Sandia Laboratories, he and his collaborators successfully implanted the first remotely controlled insulin pump in man. Much of his career has been devoted to teaching medical students, residents, and junior faculty the benefits and excitement of research. To this end, he has received student training grants from both the NIH and the American Diabetes Association. He has been Chief of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at UNM School of Medicine since 1999. This division has been recognized by US News and Report as one of the best 50 endocrine divisions in the U.S. He has been Vice Chair for the Office of Research in the Dept of Internal Medicine since 1996. He has over 500 peer reviewed publications and is an internationally recognized expert in diabetes. He is board certified in three specialties: internal medicine, endocrinology, and lipidology. He was promoted to "Distinguished Professor" in 2012 and to "Regents Professor" in 2013 for exceptional performance at the University of New Mexico.
