Allen Shaughnessy

Biography

An important innovator in medical education, Dr. Shaughnessy is associated not only with the Pinnacle Health System, but also with several universities. He's held faculty posts at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, the Medical College of Pennsylvania/Hahnemann School of Medicine, and Penn State College of Medicine. He's also on the faculty of the Harrisburg (PA) Family Practice Residency Program. Dr. Shaughnessy has been carrying the banner of evidence-based medicine for more than a decade. In 1994, he began co-authoring articles about how to search the medical literature and how to evaluate pharmaceutical ads and pitches by drug-company reps. He and his cohorts have made many presentations on these subjects, and Dr. Shaughnessy has developed a number of courses on evidence-based medicine for family practice residents. Since 1996, Dr. Shaughnessy has also been Associate Editor of the Journal of Family Practice POEMs (Patient Oriented Evidence That Matters), a leading journal club. From 1994-2003, he was Co-Editor of the Evidence-Based Medicine Newsletter.
