Practical tips and updated resources will be covered, including ideas to assist you and your patients on integrating exercise into daily life.

The talk will focus on tobacco cessation as a priority for health care providers. It will review five basic ways to get tobacco users to quit, including tobacco cessation treatment. The speaker will discuss the principles of tobacco cessation, and a streamlined approach that emphasizes the use of telephone-based tobacco cessation counseling known as "quitlines." It touches on other resources for cessation. Learners will receive an overview of the major types of pharmacotherapy and how to prescribe them for patients. However, providers will be reminded that pharmacotherapy is not recommended for certain special populations. The speaker will also touch on other forms of tobacco products that providers should be aware of, including electronic nicotine delivery devices (e-cigarettes or vaping products) and hookah.

This presentation will discuss the power of comprehensive lifestyle changes, reviewing more than 30 years of research using high-tech, state-of-the-art measures to prove the power of low-tech, low-cost, and often ancient interventions. Also, the lecture will describe proven strategies for motivating people to make and maintain comprehensive lifestyle changes as well as how to personalize a way of eating and living based on an individual’s needs, genes, and preferences. Finally, the presentation will describe many of the health policy implications of comprehensive lifestyle changes as both medically effective and cost effective.

Edward Philips, founder and director of the Institute of Lifestyle Medicine at Harvard Medical School reviews the basics of resistance training, including the effects of resistance training on muscle mass and metabolism, trends in resistance training in 2015, and recommendations for the frequency, intensity, duration and types of resistance training that are most beneficial for patients.
