This lecture will focus on known and established pathogenesis of HIV, emphasizing the damage to the immune system as well as illnesses that primary care clinicians may encounter. With expanded knowledge of therapeutic strategies to regain and maintain health, you can address complications that arise with your patients and recognize when to refer. The faculty will also discuss issues that an aging HIV population may face and how to treat them. In this session, the speaker will discuss some challenging diagnostic cases that primary care practitioners may face in their practice. These cases will feature interpretation of laboratory and imaging studies as well as encounters with rare diseases and conditions. You will learn which aspects of the history and physical exam are most useful to establish certain diagnoses, increase your awareness of certain uncommon but “can’t miss” diagnoses, and become familiar with clinical decision aids that improve diagnostic accuracy for certain common diagnoses. This case-based, interactive lecture will cover the current epidemiology of HIV in the United States, and then focus on issues critical for the primary care provider - HIV testing, identification of acute infection, initiating a baseline work-up, and understanding the basics of antiretroviral therapy. HIV prevention will be covered citing both the pre- and post-exposure prophylaxis strategies. This online activity is approved by the Florida Board of Nursing for APRNs, for 1 hour on HIV/AID (approved as of 2/12/20).
