Overview

High blood pressure is the most prevalent and modifiable risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disease. A new Guideline for the Prevention, Detection, Evaluation and Management of High Blood Pressure was recently released by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology. This session will review many of the key takeaways, highlighting changes to prior recommendations.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the latest definition of high blood pressure, benefits conferred by blood pressure lowering, and available treatment approaches
  • Understand the rationale behind the shift from the Pooled Cohort Equations to the PREVENT-CVD risk score in helping to guide the treatment of high blood pressure
  • Recognize the most common secondary causes of high blood pressure and the importance of evaluating patients with resistant hypertension for primary aldosteronism
