Overview

Media use has pro’s and con’s but without parental supervision and gatekeeping, children are likely to experience more harm than good from screen time. This action oriented talk will review the potential benefits and risks of media exposure and prepare the pediatric provider with immediately implementable skills to help families manage screen time and create media action plans from infancy through adolescence.

  • Describe potential benefits and harms of screen use to use as talking points with your patients and their parents/caregivers
  • Understand how media use can act as an opportunity stealer for young people and the impact of these lost childhood opportunities on kids and adults
  • Learn to utilize the AAP “5 Cs of Media Use” mnemonic and how to create a family media plan
  • Become familiar with technology and settings that can be used to reduce potential harm
  • Become familiar with additional media use tips for parents and caregivers from current researcher in social science
