Overview

This course addresses some of the common questions around gender-affirming care and the impact of care bans, alongside recent practice-changing pediatric asthma studies (2023–2026) and goals of SMART therapy. Faculty will also include time for an audience Q&A on these topics.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe at least 3 mental health conditions disproportionately affecting transgender youth
  • Identify at least 1 mental health benefit of gender-affirming care in the medical literature and at least 1 effect of gender-affirming care bans on mental health
  • Describe recent practice-changing pediatric asthma studies (2023–2026), and explain how they influence the use of anti-inflammatory reliever therapy and Single Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (SMART)
  • Apply guideline-aligned (GINA, NAEPP) prescribing strategies, including appropriate patient selection and dosing regimens for SMART in children with mild and persistent asthma
  • Implement practical primary care strategies to reduce exacerbations, including post-ED follow-up protocols, steroid-burst risk assessment, and adherence-support interventions
