Biography

Dr. Cohn is Professor Emeritus at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine where he was previously the Medical Director of the UHealth Preoperative Assessment Center (UPAC) and the Medical Consultation Service at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Prior to that, he was the Chief of the Division of General Internal Medicine and Associate Medical Director for Quality Improvement at SUNY Downstate where he is also Clinical Professor of Medicine Emeritus, and he was the Director of the Preoperative Clinic and Medical Consultation Service at Kings County Hospital. He was responsible for the education and supervision of more than 1100 senior medical residents and has evaluated over 30,000 patients preoperatively. In 2017, he received the SHM Award for Excellence in Teaching. He is a master of the American College of Physicians (MACP), senior fellow of the Society of Hospital Medicine (SFHM), fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (FRCP), and board member of the Society for Perioperative Assessment and Quality Improvement (SPAQI). Dr. Cohn is the author/editor of 4 books, over 100 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters, including the preoperative chapter in the 23rd-26th editions of Goldman-Cecil Textbook of Medicine, as well as multiple online topics and modules for UpToDate and SHM Consults. He has given over 400 CME presentations and is widely recognized as an expert in the field of perioperative medicine. The second edition of his most recent book, Decision Making in Perioperative Medicine – Clinical Pearls (McGraw Hill & ACP), was just published in April 2025.
