Biography

Michael S. Irwig is an Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and a board-certified adult endocrinologist and Director of Transgender Medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Irwig received his bachelor’s degree summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University and his M.D. degree from Cornell University with honors in research. He completed his residency in internal medicine at the University of Virginia and his endocrinology fellowship at the University of Washington. Dr. Irwig has provided endocrine care to over 500 gender diverse patients and researches the effects of gender-affirming hormone therapy. Other research interests include men with persistent sexual and non-sexual side effects of finasteride (Propecia) and men with borderline testosterone levels. He has over 59 peer-reviewed publications and is a co-author on two chapters of WPATH’s Standards of Care 8 (hormone therapy and eunuchs). Dr. Irwig has presented over 250 invited lectures at hospitals, medical schools and conferences across 5 continents on transgender health and male hypogonadism.
