Beyond SSRIs: Treating Complicated Depression
Description
Lack of response to SSRI medications for depression is common in primary care. Several treatment “next step” options are available, including medication augmentation or switching. Further treatment options may include ketamine, transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroconvulsive therapy. Through a concise review of recent clinical guidelines and an evidence0based review, attendees will get updated on cutting edge approaches to manage these “difficult to treat” cases. Case-based discussion will be used to illustrate concepts.
Learning Objectives
- Examine augmentation versus switch strategies in the management of major depression.
- Discuss how neuromodulation fits into the management of difficult-to-treat depression.
- Review second and third-line medications strategies for complicated depression including ketamine, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors.
