Optimizing Acute Pain Care to Prevent Chronicity: Risk Assessment, Management, and Novel Nonopioid Therapy

Effective acute pain management is essential to improving patient outcomes and reducing the risk of chronic pain development. In this activity, expert faculty examine the clinical consequences of undertreated acute pain, identify risk factors that contribute to pain chronification, and review best practices for assessment and management using multimodal, opioid-sparing approaches. The program also highlights emerging evidence for a novel voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) inhibitor, including its mechanism of action, clinical efficacy and safety data, and potential role in contemporary acute pain management. Learners will leave better equipped to apply evidence-based strategies that optimize pain control while minimizing reliance on opioids.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the consequences of inadequately treated acute pain and risk factors that contribute to the transition from acute to chronic pain
  • Apply best practices for acute pain management, including the use of validated pain assessment tools, risk stratification, and multimodal, opioid-sparing therapeutic strategies
  • Describe the mechanism of action, clinical trial evidence, and appropriate use of the novel voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) inhibitor
