Overview

Follow-up with a primary care clinician in the first year postpartum is an essential component of pregnancy-related care, especially for patients who experienced Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes (APOs) that confer enhanced cardiovascular risk, such as Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (HDP) and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM). Using real patient cases, this session will provide a primer in best practices for the care of these patients in the first year postpartum and beyond.

Learning Objectives

  • Describe the critical role of primary care clinicians in postpartum care, highlighting patients with Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes (APOs)
  • Define the lifetime cardiovascular risk associated with APOs, with a focus on Hypertensive Disorders of Pregnancy (HDP) and Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM)
  • Apply best practices for primary care during the first year after pregnancy complicated by APOs
  • Compare longitudinal cardiovascular risk assessment and preventative care strategies between patients with and without a history of APOs.
