Brain Aneurysms Are Treatable: But They Must Be Diagnosed First

Description

Because they are often undetected until rupture, cerebral aneurysms are responsible for high mortality. Further complicating matters, many symptoms that might provide warning can be attributed to other less dangerous conditions, such as influenza or stress. Fortunately, primary care clinicians can play an important role in the identification and management of brain aneurysms. This session will describe signs, symptoms, and risk factors for aneurysm development, populations who are most vulnerable, screening, and treatment options so that PCPs can counsel patients and refer promptly. Don’t miss out on this important session that can help to save lives. Brain aneurysms are treatable, and early detection is critical.

Learning Objectives

  • Review the prevalence of cerebral aneurysms and the implications of improper diagnosis
  • Examine risk factors for aneurysm formation and rupture, including which populations are at high risk
  • Discuss familial occurrence of cerebral aneurysms and screening recommendations for this population
  • Recognize signs and symptoms of aneurysm rupture to help guide imaging and management
  • Describe treatment options to ensure optimal patient education and referral to specialty care
