The Honeymoon is Over: The Return of International Pathogens to Your Waiting Room

Description

Emerging infectious diseases present an evolving challenge for primary care clinicians, who are often the first point of contact for patients presenting with unfamiliar or atypical symptom patterns. This session equips clinicians with a practical framework for recognizing, evaluating, and managing infectious diseases on the rise in the United States. Through a focused review of key historical and physical examination findings, participants will sharpen their diagnostic approach — learning which pertinent positives and negatives help rule in or rule out specific pathogens. The session will also address evidence-based treatment strategies tailored to individual patient risk factors, and will clarify when escalation to an infectious disease specialist is warranted.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand key pertinent positive and negative historical questions and physical examination data points to assist in ruling in or ruling out specific emerging infectious diseases on the rise in the United States
  • Be able to synthesize an appropriate differential diagnosis and – when appropriate – order additional confirmatory testing modalities
  • Evaluate and recommend appropriate treatment strategies individualized for patient risk factors
  • Apply principles for emergent and urgent patient referrals to an infectious disease specialist when necessary
